There was only one doctor in all of Nome.
Dr. Curtis Welch was there because he too, had looked for gold,
but he liked Alaska and decided to stay.
Dr. Welch was a very experienced and well trained doctor.

Dr. Welch had two nurses, Bertha Seville and Emily Morgan, working at the hospital
but times were hard and there always too many sick people to help.
One day, Dr. Welch discovered that there were children that were sick with diptheria
and he didn't have enough medicine (called serum or antitoxin) to make them well.
