The railroad brought the antitoxin as far as it could, but it was still too far.
It was decided that the dog sled teams that were being
used to carry mail and supplies would have to help out.

These men, called mushers, and their dogs made a relay,
passing the cylinder with the antitoxin to each other.

The last musher, Gunnar Kasson, and his lead dog, Balto,
brought the antioxin to the hospital
and many lives were saved.
It wasn't an easy trip, the brave men and dogs had to travel
over unmarked trails and through a blizzard to make it there safely.
The trip took six days.

Balto, became a very famous dog.
For two years after that he traveled
thoughout the United States as part of a traveling show.
