Stevenson's family were civil engineers. They designed and built lighthouses.

He was expected to join the family business after studying to be an engineer.
He also studied law and passed the bar.
But he loved writing more and set his mind to be a writer.

RLS kept two books in his pockets. One book to read and one book to write in.

He married an American divorcee who had a son. They traveled together. His stepson was the inspiration for Treasure Island.

Treasure Island was published as a magazine serial and later as a novel. It is still the most memorable story of pirates and buried treasure.

It can be read today in print or in electronic form.
